Dragons

The dragons of Udar have changed dramatically since Amaranthinos first gave them life. Brown dragons were the first form that he had envisioned, and they remained for the first two generations. However, after the War of the Magi, the dragons took on different forms and abilities as their scales changed color. Afterward, they no longer saw eye-to-eye, and their culture became divided. Their tribulations grew worse as black dragons emerged soon after the war’s end, and further still when they lost their wings to become known as the dragonborn.

Brown

Brown dragons were the first to be born on Udari, starting with Pommym, the first dragon emperor. They could only exhale a fire, but were not nearly as intense as the red dragons that would come many thousands of years later. Full-blooded dragons have the capability to live thousands of years, some achieving ages as much as 300,000 years old. In the events leading up to the War of Magi, the dragons all changed color, all except for one. A true dragon in all his righteous balance has brown mundane colored scales. It was believed that there was one other, but the true knowledge of such has been kept secret and the information lost to time. Still some speculated that the honor belongs to Niodyt the Claw of Fate.

Black

Black dragons did not start appearing until after the War of the Magi had been concluded. Stories let forth by Lord Maldrand revealed that the Nommares’ scales turned black shortly before his death. Maldrand’s influence was the only reason in that regard that allowed these dragons to even live. The first known birth was Kyndrinth, son of Cergon and Verta, both red dragons. The event caused quite a stir at the time, but Lord Maldrand agreed to divide his lands and give the eastern portion to Kyndrinth and all the others that would soon follow. That included Firlynia, who later became Kyndrinth’s wife.

Black dragons have a unique power over death and the cause for destruction. They can exhale a black or green sludge that causes considerable damage to flesh, and even dissolve other inorganic materials. Only other black dragons and dragonborn are immune to effects of the substance they produce. Their culture makes them different from most. Their beliefs constitute the fact that destruction and death are necessities. Life cannot exist without death, and death cannot exist without life. Black dragons choose in fact to embrace it, and never fear it. The only thing that can erase such things is time. Time can heal all, either by pushing it far into the future until it is renewed, or reversing it completely. The Coven of the Jek’hom was said to be initiated by the first black dragon, Nommares the Prophet, but most believe he was an unwitting pawn in a game that has been going on for eons.

Blue

The blue dragons migrated to the land of Aemrebeph where the portal to the Aer was located, deep beneath a towering prison. Blue dragons can exhale a spiritual and magical force drawn in from the air around them. They also became well adept at harnessing Aer and other magical forces. The first and greatest blue dragons were Cheizzerth the Spark, and Eozyn the Furious Wind. Their brood were the ones to begin establishing a group of dragons tasked with controlling Aer and the chaos it can create, both as means of a power source, and to prevent disasters from its misuse. The organization was called the Iqoutis Intrapy.

The power blue dragons wield must be controlled both with strength and wisdom, lest it become too chaotic for effective control. Fire itself is chaos incarnate. It can easily breach out of control. Fire disrupts the Aer and ignites it, burning up its energy and changing it into a form that can no longer be useful. Aer can be changed into fire under the right conditions and focus, but once done so, it cannot be changed back. Also, for this reason, fire magic, though not forbidden, is only allowed by the most trained individuals.

Brass

The brass dragons of Udari came to the northern and volcanic land of Ylri. It is here where the portal to the realm of time was located. Brass dragons have a unique gift in the ability to see snippets of time whether past, present, or future. Future sight however is quite rare and only a select few have ever possessed this gift. Even more rare was the gift of cosmic sight, making one capable of seeing beyond their own realm of time and peering into another. Only one brass dragon in all existence was able to harness this gift for a short period of time. It required assistance, and drove her into a psychosis afterward. The purpose of this gift was to assist in adjudication. Brass dragons had lost the ability to breathe fire, but instead exhale a beam of energy that can revert time on the affected area. It should also be noted that brass dragons can move very quickly. They do so by skipping through time, disappearing in one location, and then suddenly reappearing a few feet further ahead. They can often do this once every few seconds, giving them the appearance of time skipping. The first brass dragons were Avny the Oathkeeper, and Brieldresdyn the Timeless One.

The power of brass dragons is not easily countered, but the element that could even attempt it would be death and destruction itself. The two would seem to always cancel each other out when present, so they tend to remain apart. Even still, the organization, known as the Enneluom Vilu was established to bring these two together and find harmony.

Bronze

The bronze dragons migrated to Ghetsa when they gained their colors. This is where the portal to the plane of lightning is located. Their unique gifts have made them incredibly strong and they have the ability to manipulate electrical energies and gravitational waves. They exhale lightning, and can electrically charge objects with a touch. They can also induce magnetism in metallic objects as well. The most gifted of bronze dragons can even manipulate the mass of objects to an extent so great that it can temporarily turn small objects into singularities. The greatest and first of these bronze dragons were Nandet the Sky Tender, and Cemberiss the Shield.

Lightning however, can easily be grounded by the right force. The power of the earth given to the green dragons proved useful when battling against Iyrar. In time the bronze dragons saw that their power and strength should be used to protect. This is also why Iyrar’s Aventurine turns into a shield. This is their purpose. Bronze dragons headed up an organization meant to protect Udari’s citizens.

Copper

The copper dragons came to Ievo when they gained the color on their scales. Across a poisonous swamp is a dark cavern where the portal to the realm of shadow lay hidden. Copper dragons hide in the shadows and can exhale a shadowy cloud that can conceal themselves, even in daylight. This breath can be poisonous as well, and can be terribly debilitating to those not resistant or immune to it. For most, the only ones that could survive would be other copper dragons. Their skin and constitution actually gives them immunity to almost any poison or venom. The first copper dragons to gain their scales were Shyndil the False Talon, and Bemronog the Ultimate Shadow. These two established an army of deadly mercenaries harboring the darkness. They were hired to do the most secretive and underhanded tasks.

The only thing known to combat the shadows is to shed light on it. It is difficult for darkness to escape it. The gold dragons of Cheldrynth were instrumental in defeating Olomnu during the War of the Magi.

Gold

The gold dragons came to Cheldrynth where the portal to the plane of light lay hidden in a cave underneath a glowing mountain. Gold dragons are stoic believers in virtue and justice. They believe the light heals and protects. It is fair, but also vengeful against evil and darkness. Gold dragons can exhale a searing beam of light. It burns darkness and heals the righteous. Gold dragons are also very insightful, capable of rooting out liars with a single glance. Their nature has easily placed them in the seat of the emperor since the beginning of dragons. It is believed that if Lord Pommym had been around for the War of the Magi, his scales would have turned gold as well. The first known gold dragons however, were Radekthais, also known as the Great Dragon King and his wife Chyny the Arbiter.

Just like light can illuminate the darkness, so too can a shadow blot out the sun. When the two come together it would seem that they always cancel each other out. So that the light can maintain strength over the darkness, Emperor Radekthais established courthouses in each region to help enforce laws and provide justice to those who were wronged. One of the greatest arbiters to grace the organization was Lady Akra, who served as a judge and adjudicator in Ghetsa.

Green

The green dragons migrated to Meofi where the portal to the realm of earth lay deep within the Reya Cave. Green dragons are druidic by nature, believing life in all its forms are sacred. Life itself however is not weak, and its power can be harnessed in different ways. The green dragons have the power to create and produce life, or manipulate it to destroy. This destruction can even take form in the earth itself, causing massive quakes. The first green dragons have been enshrined in their lands and are still more than ever protecting it: Navni the Lifebringer, and Nymmas the Overgrowth.

The power of green dragons can be countered as well. This comes in the form of water. Water erodes the earth, floods lands, and causes decomposition without sacrificing itself. To combat this and all other forms of natural (or unnatural) destruction, the green dragons forged a sect of druids to protect the lands. Many ages later, the druids reformed the group and called themselves the Yralissa.

Red

The red dragons traveled to Andro when their scales turned color. Deep below the earth here in the Caverns of Fire, the portal to that realm lies buried. Red dragons have the ability to exhale an intense fire that can melt iron. The greatest red dragons can produce a flame so intense that it can melt the toughest of metals, even tungsten. Red dragons are also strong, agile, and powerful warriors. They are resistant to the most extreme forms of pain and fight with a ferocity greater than any other dragon. These warriors, called Tirs, are named after the great red dragon Tirvoim the Warrior. Both he and his wife Lirsyr the Passionate Flame, parented the greatest army of Tirs in dragon history. Their legacy continues on, even today.

The only thing that can tame the intense heat of a red dragon’s breath is the bone chilling freeze of a silver dragon’s breath. Their power was instrumental in defeating Sanare in the War of Magi.

Silver

The calm and quiet natured silver dragons came to the land of Phaphnede when their scales changed to their color. It is here that the plane of ice can be found deep underground in a frosty, ice covered cave. Silver dragons can exhale a breath of intense cold, capable of extinguishing the hottest flames, and freezing water instantly. The most powerful of these dragons can produce a cold so devoid of any heat, that the temperature approaches absolute zero. Silver dragons are watchers by nature, never truly moving, much like solid ice. Their silvery scales are so shiny that they reflect the area around them, distorting another’s view of the area and can also conceal them under the proper conditions. Of these, Paldri the Hunter, and Phyne the Watcher were among the first silver dragons to obtain their scales.

The magic of Aer is the only known energy capable of combating the deep freeze of a silver dragon’s breath. Even the intense fire of a red dragon is no match for it. Heat that is produced is caused by particles that contain substance and mass, but the energy of Aer is simply that, pure, massless energy. Therefore, it is uniquely suited to interacting with the extreme cold and absolute temperatures of the silver dragons. The silver dragons may be watchers, but they are also lone wolf hunters with keen eyesight. They will maintain an eye on their quarry and snipe at them from a distance if they cause trouble on their lands.

White

The white dragons came to Odrois when their scales had finally changed color. The portal to the realm of water rests deep under water in a dark cavern. The white dragons are unique in the fact that not only can they fly, but they can also breathe and swim underwater. They can force a tremendous amount of water through their gills and back out their mouths creating a flow of water that can disrupt water currents and anyone else caught in its wake. They can also swallow large amounts of water and expel it above water as well. White dragons however, are likely to be the most charismatic of all dragons. They use a form of logic and wit that makes them strong mediators and keen negotiators. The best of these was Oithir the Insightful Mind. While his mate Lavnis the Deep Sea, was one of the greatest swimmers.

The unfortunate happenstance of water, in all natural cases, is its weakness to electricity. Because of this, the bronze dragons made it possible for them to defeat Falise in the War of the Magi.
