Drakonis Dialects

Drakonis is not spoken identically by every dragon culture. Regional pressures, ancestral traditions, and cultural ideals have shaped distinct dialects over time, altering pronunciation and occasionally the construction of words themselves. These changes are rarely arbitrary. A dialect often reflects how a people understand strength, wisdom, courage, beauty, discipline, or survival. The meaning of a root may remain recognizable across cultures, but its spoken form can shift to better embody the values of those who use it.

Ranenth Clan (Brass Dragons): Ylri Region

The Ranenth Clan preserves a highly formal style of Drakonis. In speech, they follow established pronunciation closely and permit little dialectal alteration, contraction, or omission. In writing, all proper nouns are fully enclosed within opening and closing Alef marks, regardless of whether their status could be inferred from context. This precision reflects the clan’s pragmatic and disciplined nature, as well as its belief that a written record must remain clear long after its original context has passed.

Nekhraes Clan (Black Dragons): Nekhrae Region

Black Dragons may strengthen certain Talon-aligned sounds by adding weight to them, most notably changing th to nth. This added consonant gives the sound greater gravity and force, reflecting a cultural tendency to reinforce what is already strong. In names, titles, oaths, and other important words, this modification can make the pronunciation feel more deliberate, formidable, and authoritative.

Copper Dragons alter alignment through reduction rather than addition, most notably changing tha to th. Their culture values precision, economy, and the belief that nothing should be wasted—not movement, effort, material, or speech. Shaped by life in resource-scarce swamp lands and by their disciplined, bynzul-like traditions, Copper Dragons remove what they consider unnecessary while preserving the word’s essential force.

Norruk Clan (Red Dragons): Andro Region

Red Dragons place particular emphasis on strength and power, and few sounds in Drakonis embody those ideals more clearly than kh. The sound begins deep in the lower throat, resembling the first motion of drawing fire upward from the belly. It emerges with a heavy, guttural resonance and a deeper bass tone than ordinary speech. Despite this association, producing the sound does not release flame unless the dragon consciously intends to do so. In writing, the phoneme is represented by /kh/ and is roughly comparable to the uvular or pharyngeal fricatives found in Arabic and several other human languages.
